The 2020 Little League World Series has been cancelled due to concerns around the Coronavirus pandemic. This is the first time in history the Williamsport event will not be happening since its first tournament in 1947. In addition to the cancellation of the Little League World Series, Little League has also cancelled 82 different qualifying events, as well as Little League Softball.
“This is a heartbreaking decision for everyone at Little League International, but more so for those millions of Little Leaguers who have dreamt of one day playing in one of our seven World Series events,” Little League President Stephen D. Keener said in a press release from Little League.
While the Little League might have cancelled all of their events for the Summer of 2020, The Little League Organization has pledged $1.2 million to little leagues around the world who are struggling from the effects of COVID-19.
Little League plans to return in for the Summer of 2021, and to celebrate their 75th anniversary season in 2022.
