Lewis Hamilton, of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, scored his 92nd career Formula 1 victory on Sunday at the Portuguese Grand Prix. With the win, Hamilton passes racing legend Michael Schumacher for the most all-time.
Hamilton started on the pole but slipped to third place during the early stages of the race as light rain began to fall, making the track conditions very treacherous. Hamilton paced himself and used his Mercedes power to race back to the lead, passing his teammate Valtteri Bottas on the 20th circuit. Hamilton went on to dominate the remainder of the race for his 8th triumph of the 2020 season.
When asked about the emotional impact of passing Schumacher, Hamilton stated: "It's going to take some time to sink in. I was still pushing flat out coming across the line, I'm still very much in race mode mentally. I can't find the right words at the moment." Hamilton will now be looking to earn his 7th career Formula 1 title this season.
