In the midst of rising Covid-19 numbers, it appears studios are once again preparing for the worst as the first major film to be released in 2022 has been delayed to later on in the year. "Morbius", the Jared Leto led Marvel film has been pushed back from its January 28th release date and will now be hitting theaters on April 1, 2022.
The decision comes at a time when Sony's latest Marvel outing, "Spider-Man: No Way Home", has been shattering box office records. Currently as of 01/03/2022 the film has grossed $1,372,600,664 worldwide, becoming the 10th highest grossing film of all-time.
"Morbius" has walked a difficult road on its way to theaters as it was originally set to release on July 10, 2020. It was pushed back to July 31, 2020 before it was pushed into the following year on March 19, 2021. However, not long after this announcement the film was delayed yet again to October 8, 2021. Then it was pushed back again into January of 2022. Everything was pointed at the film finally meeting its release date as marketing is well underway.
The decision comes in the wake of the Omicron variant skyrocketing in the U.S. and worldwide with hundreds of thousands of new cases being reported daily.
As of right now this is the only major studio film to be delayed, however if 2020 is an idication of things, other studios are likely to follow. Some of the major releases set for these next couple months include "Uncharted", "The Batman" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness".
