The world is in mourning after Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died early last Friday. The Duke was the longest serving royal consort in British history, serving for over six decades alongside his wife Queen Elizabeth II.

A father of four, a World War II veteran and former naval officer, he was no stranger to service. Philip was also known for his witty humor and sometimes off-color statements but was committed to his royal service.

Philip’s oldest son, Prince Charles, paid tribute to his late father in a statement saying, “My father, I supposed the last 70 years, has given the most remarkable, devoted service to the Queen, my family and to the country, and also to the whole of the commonwealth.”

The Duke involved himself in over 800 organizations and showed great interest in environmental conservation. His death comes nearly four years after his retirement from royal engagements. He was 99 years old.
