SHIPPENSBURG, PA – While Santa is busy preparing for the holidays, some local law enforcement agencies decided to lend him a helping hand in granting Christmas wishes.
On Saturday, December 18th, 16 police officers from around the area came together for their annual Shop with a Cop event. During the event, 12 kids were each given $200 and paired up with an officer to shop around the store with. Officers assisted from the Shippensburg Borough, Carlisle Borough, Shippensburg University, Dickinson College, Cumberland County Sheriff and the Pennsylvania State Police.
All of the kids, with their lists in hand, were eager to find the perfect gifts. While some bought themselves toys, including one kid even purchasing himself a new TV, others were in a more giving mood, picking out gifts for their family or their pets instead. One of the kids even bought a snack for an officer to show his appreciation for all of his help.
The gifts were then wrapped by members of the Cumberland Valley Hose Company, and each kid was given an additional gift bag full of school supplies.
All of the money raised for the event was donated by area businesses. Pizza Man, Giant Food Stores, Vigilant Hose Company and 11 other businesses all donated to making the event possible. In addition, 6 area residents also donated to make the event possible. According to SUPD Officer Hinkle, who was in charge of organizing the event this year, they managed to raise enough money to get a start on next year’s event as well.
