In the upcoming weeks, Shippensburg University will be providing free suicide prevention training to all its students. This training is sponsored by the Housing and Residence life Department, and will allow students to become question, persuade, refer or QPR “gatekeepers.”

This “gatekeeper” title will not only give students a certification they can put on their resumes but also guide them should they ever find themselves in a situation where they need to help someone.

I attended the first session led by certified QPR trainers, Candace Claar and Dr. Andrea Malmount where the facts and myths surrounding suicide were discussed as well how to approach someone you are worried about.

Students register for the remaining two sessions taking place on Monday, March 22nd from 11:30AM to 1:00PM and Wednesday, April 7th at 3:30 to 5:00PM using the QR code found in an email from Housing and Residence Life sent out Monday March 15.
