The Multiverse is loose in the first trailer for “Doctor Strange 2”.

With the conclusion of the Infinity Saga many wondered where the direction of Phase 4 would be heading. Well following the events of “Loki” and Spider-Man: No Way Home” the path to the multiverse is officially open, and now it’s Doctor Strange’s job to clean up the multidimensional mess before him. The first trailer for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is officially here.

The trailer doesn’t show much in terms of the story, but this first look gives us a good sense of the more horror based approach the film will take. This is especially notable as the film will be directed by Sam Raimi, best known for “The Evil Dead” trilogy (or the Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” trilogy for comic book fans). Speaking of Spider-Man, the film takes place following the events of “No Way Home” as Doctor Strange deals with the repercussions of the botched spell Peter had him cast. Seemingly incapable of facing this threat alone, Strange will seek out the help of The Scarlet Witch and will also be joined by Xochilt Gomez as America Chavez.

Arguably the biggest reveal of the trailer comes at the very end with the live-action debut of Doctor Strange Supreme. This is major as he’ll be the first Marvel animated character to enter the MCU. His first appearance was in the fourth episode of “What If…?” in which he destroyed his universe in an attempt to resurrect Dr. Christine Palmer. When we last saw Strange Supreme he was tasked by the Watcher to look over the pocket dimension containing Killmonger and an Arnim Zola controlled Vision fighting over the Infinity Stones. However, it’s unclear whether the pocket dimension will come into play, it’ll be interesting to see how this sinister Strange will play into the film’s overall story.

It should also be noted that the film recently wrapped up several weeks of reshoots. The goal of those reshoots was to let the film have more fun with it’s multiversal concept and to shoot several “mind-blowing” cameos. If “Spider-Man: No Way Home” taught us anything, it’s clear that just about anyone could be making a return in this new film.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
