Deadpool, Wicked Witches and more debut during Super Bowl

By: Adam Beam 2/12/2024

Sunday's big game brought out some of 2024 biggest releases and gave fans their first looks at films like "Deadpool and Wolverine" and "Wicked".

Deadpool & Wolverine

The Merc with a Mouth returns to the big screen after his last appearance in 2019's "Deadpool 2." This time, he's joining the MCU, and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is along for the ride. The first teaser suggests Marvel is bringing the R-Rating to their cinematic universe, rumored to bid farewell to the 20th Century Fox Universe of films. In addition to Hugh Jackman, the film is rumored to feature appearances from other "X-Men" stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Halle Berry. The film is set to hit theaters on July 26.

Wicked

Based on the hit Broadway musical, the Big Game also offered our first glimpse of the film adaptation of "Wicked," starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The trailer provides a few glimpses of "Defying Gravity," the showstopping number that closes out the first act of the musical. While not explicitly stated in the title, the film will be the first part of a two-parter, with each film adapting each act of the original production. "Wicked" flies into theaters on November 27.

Twisters

While Bill Paxton has passed away and Helen Hunt will not be returning, "Twisters" serves as the sequel to the 1996 disaster film, starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones. This time, the film follows a team of storm chasers testing an experimental weather alert system. "Twisters" roars into theaters on July 19.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

The last major trailer of the night was a new look at the next installment in the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Set years after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes," the film sees the hyper-intelligent apes continuing their evolution as the dominant species. Unlike previous installments, Andy Serkis will not be performing motion capture, but the film will star Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy. "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" hits theaters on May 10.
