Trump Ordered to pay $83.3 Million in Defamation Case to Jean Carroll

A verdict has been reached in the defamation trial with former president Donald Trump and it comes with a hefty cost.

On Friday, a federal jury in New York slapped former president Trump with a multi-million dollar verdict that awards Jean Carroll 83.3 million dollars in damages for her defamation lawsuit.

Back in 2019 Jean Carrol, a former magazine columnist, accused Donald Trump in an article of sexually assaulting her in the ‘90s. Similar to previous sexual harassment cases involving Trump, he has denied Carroll’s claims calling her a liar and telling reporters that she was “not my type.”

At last year's trial, Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan argued Trump's comments subjected her to threats via her social media and ruined her reputation. Caroll’s attorney says Trump's audible comments and refusal to remain quiet during Carroll’s testimony likely contributed to the jury’s ruling.

When asked what she was going to do with the money Jean Carroll said, “One of the things we can do is think about how we can restore women their rights to their bodies” and “I would like to give money to something Donald trump hates.”

Kaplan added that she is confident they will be able to collect the $83.3 million saying Trump could either pay a bond or deposit the money in full until he appeals.
